Colin Harman ranks Helvetica as his favorite movie, is an Apple computer fanatic, and is visually swooned by the smooth curves of a well designed font. But he's no graphic designer nerd. Well, he is a graphic designer, but a super talented one who's also a fun-loving guy. Besides pushing pixels, he enjoys photography, reading, board sports, and Frisbee golf.
A native Californian, he grew up in a Los Angeles suburb, and then moved to Auburn in Northern California. He trekked around the country for two years after high school with a traveling ministry based in San Diego. That experience taught him a lot of leadership skills and earned him two years of free school, which is what brought him to Liberty University and Lynchburg.
Colin has a great family. His dad was a sheriff for Los Angeles County for 25 years and, after retiring twice, now works for a consulting firm. Colin’s hero is his dad because he taught him how to follow after God's heart with a genuine reckless abandon. His caring mother is a cancer survivor who now works as an elementary school secretary. His only sibling Amber, who he calls "the best sister in the world," got married May 17, 2008. Colin says that if you don't agree that his sister is the best ever, "I will fight you -- that is no lie."
Growing up, Colin thought he'd want to color cartoons for Disney. He'd probably be in a studio today if they still made cartoons that way. However, he still loves all things Disney and can rattle off more trivia than anyone would ever bother listening to.
Colin came to Blue Ridge in October 2004 and started filling the sound engineer need for student ministries as a volunteer. He enjoys Blue Ridge because he feels like it's a family, and he likes that it teaches that the church is relevant and necessary. He also appreciates its focus on excellence, not to be "better," but to fulfill God’s purpose. After working one semester at Blue Ridge as an intern, Colin proved himself to be too good to let go. His job description includes being the visual arts guru (graphic designer), a creative thinker of new ideas, and assistant to the "best and coolest technical director in all the land," Andrew Hunt.
A detail-oriented person who sometimes forgets to sleep, Colin counts pizza and perfectionism as his kryptonite. He can beatbox, he probably could have been a stunt driver, and he can remember numbers better than names. Electronic wordless music is the soundtrack to his life, and his favorite drink at Starbucks is a Quad, Iced, Venti, no whip, one pump hazelnut, chocolate syrup drizzled, soy milk, white chocolate mocha.
